TREASURE ON THE TRAIL
by Roald
(1992-2007), the Alaskan Sled Dog

My name is Roald and I’m a sled dog who loves to have fun. Usually I run in the team beside my sister, Sojo. She runs on the right side of the team and I run on the left. Sojo’s pretty quiet and it’s always fun to tease her.

One day we were running along the beach just north of the village of Paulatuk, about half way across the arctic. Suddenly I spotted something shiny by my feet and I snatched it up quick as a wink.

It was an empty Sprite can! What a treasure!

I started crunching it with my teeth and the other dogs looked to see what was the racket. When Sojo saw the Sprite can, her eyes got really big.

I knew she wanted that can, so I decided to have some fun. I held it over beside her mouth like I was going to give her the can and just as she tried to grab it, I jerked my head away. I did that a whole bunch of times and Sojo missed every time.

Then all of a sudden she lunged and made a grab for my can. She got hold of it with her mouth and started tugging! Wow, Sojo was stronger then I thought and for a few seconds it looked like she was actually going to get it away from me. But she didn’t.

Finally, she let go. I held my head up high and crunched and crunched. Every time she looked at me, I’d crunch real fast.

Then the inevitable happened. I lost my hold on the can and the treasured can fell to the ground, lost forever somewhere in the arctic. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.
